On Sunday, October 18, the Lemp Mansion will host a Halloween trivia competition, and according to Explore St. Louis’s Halloween guide, the prize is an overnight stay. The mansion, at 3322 DeMenil Place in Benton Park, is the 33-room home of the Lemp brewing family, now a restaurant and inn. The guide doesn’t list the start time or the price, so check with the mansion before you plan your evening.
A trivia night in this house has no shortage of material. The Lemps built a brewing empire partly beneath the streets of south St. Louis, using caves under Cherokee Street to lager beer before mechanical refrigeration, and the family lost four members to suicide between 1904 and 1949. That makes for a very specific trivia category, and the kind of questions where being good at the subject is not entirely a compliment.
The mansion runs a full slate of this sort of thing. Its website lists spirits tours, murder mystery dinners, an escape room and a paranormal hunt called The Lemp Experience, along with the restaurant and the rooms. Winning the trivia means you get to sleep in a place where staff and guests have reported ghosts since the 1970s. Our story on the Lemp Mansion ghosts sorts those reports by how much anyone can prove.
If you want a night in the house, the window is not unlimited. The Pointer family has listed the mansion for $3.9 million, and the venue is scheduled to keep running through December 2027.
The prize is a night in a house where, by most accounts, someone else is usually already awake.
