Bad Santa 5K listing

On Sunday, December 20, the Bad Santa 5K will run a timed course through Carondelet Park in south St. Louis, starting at 3900 Holly Hills Blvd. Finishers get a custom race shirt and free beer at the line, and the afterparty is at Urban Chestnut’s Bierhall in The Grove. The race doubles as a winter coat drive supporting the Kurt Warner First Things First Foundation, with new or gently used winter gear going to Operation Food Search.

The name promises bad behavior. The fine print promises a coat drive. St. Louis, as usual, has found a way to do both before noon.

The organizers describe the course as a run through “stunning winter scenes with plenty of lakes, woods and railroad tracks to explore.” That is a generous way to describe December in Missouri, and it is also accurate. Carondelet Park has all of those things, and in the third week of December it will have them at a temperature that explains the coat drive.

The listing I found doesn’t give a start time or a price, so check before you go. Registration runs through Race Roster.

Bring a coat to donate. Keep the one you’re wearing for the walk back to the car, where the free beer will be doing less than you hoped.
